Make a private garment-label photo archive you can find again

A saved label photograph is most useful when you can tell which garment it belongs to. Try creating a small private reference album for pieces whose care information, product code or repair history you often need.

The National Trust for Scotland's collections documentation overview explains how it links object records with images and keeps location information current. The simple home workflow below borrows that organising principle; it is not a museum conservation procedure.

Start with five garments

  1. Choose a recognisable name, such as “navy work jacket”, and use it consistently in your private notes or photo titles.
  2. Take one photograph of the whole piece, followed by readable images of its brand, size, composition and care labels.
  3. Keep both sides of a label or every page of a folded label together. Check the text is legible before putting the garment away.
  4. Add a dated note about a repair or alteration, with a photograph where useful.
  5. Record a simple storage location if it will help: a named shelf, garment bag or seasonal box.

Keep original label photographs as well as any typed transcription. A missed symbol or percentage can change the meaning. Add later information as a new dated note instead of silently overwriting what the original label showed.

Choose private storage you control and keep an appropriate backup. Receipts can contain names, addresses, payment information and order references; store them separately or remove personal details before sharing an extract.

You can use an ordinary private folder or album for this exercise. It does not require making a wardrobe item public or listing it for sale.
